Ink & Flow: Mindful Brushwork for CNY

The Year of the Horse will be upon us before you know it, and this session is a chance to combine mindfulness with creativity, exploring how the act of putting brush to paper can be a meditative practice, a mirror for our presence, and a chance to see ourselves from a new perspective.

We will put aside the idea of achieving through calligraphy, instead focusing on the act and presence of writing: feeling the flow of qi as we connect body to brush, facing the truth that is unveiled through each stroke and character, and letting go of rigid ideas around beauty and perfection.

Beyond the practice itself, we will examine the tao of Chinese calligraphy, with a philosophical, storytelling approach that allows you to understand the history of this practice more deeply.

And yet, we will engage in all of this with a sense of playfulness and wonder – at the end of the day, we are making art, and celebrating the incoming Year of the Fire Horse.

All participants will leave with two or three of their own fai chun creations, as well as their own meditative brushwork practice.

ABOUT KARIS

Karis is a practitioner of deep noticing.

She is drawn to the space between the known and the unknown, walking towards it with a curious, wild heart and finding freedom in how things unfold across time and place.

She feels most at home where culture and contrast meet — where nature is close, and energy and art are, too. This sensitivity to yin and yang allows her to bridge a professional eye for spatial and graphic design with years spent exploring art as a spiritual language.

For her, calligraphy lives at the precise shoreline of what she loves: just as we move through life, every Chinese character is a tiny conversation between order and chaos.

The forms ask for structure; the stroke invites creativity. In a single mark, you can feel both.

As this year carries fire energy – fast and catalytic – Karis feels called to share a conversation with that energy. Not how to control it, but how to notice and drift with it.

She holds space as a "theatre of being", where the hand is encouraged to move ahead of the mind’s expectations.

Karis invites you to join this conversation through the archetypes of the meditator, the artist, and the warrior.

Come curious. Leave with a portrait of the moment, or simply a small thing that remembers how you arrived, and your fai chun as a visible form of your inner knowing, no different from drawing an oracle card with insights.
